Watergoat Trash Collection Device

Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation just installed its first Watergoat trash collecting device located at 10th Street and U.S. 1 in New Smyrna Beach.

This Watergoat was installed in conjunction with the City of New Smyrna Beach and the Marine Discovery Center. A Watergoat collects trash washing in from stormwater drains on surrounding streets before it hits our waterways and oceans. The Streets Department of New Smyrna Beach will be removing debris on a regular basis for proper disposal and the Marine Discovery Center will be responsible for collecting data on the types of debris that collects in the Watergoat.

This data collection will help with ongoing education as well as to identify the source of the debris. In addition to the environment, reduced marine pollution also benefits both tourists and area residents who enjoy local beaches, the Indian River Lagoon, and marine animals.
