Camps Give Students Hands-On Marine Experiences
In summer 2025, Clearwater Marine Aquarium hosted a camp season for 53 underserved youth, offering immersive marine science experiences entirely free of charge. This unique opportunity was made possible through the generous support of Ron Jon Surf Shop and the Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation, Inc.
Running June 16 through July 18, the full-day camp program combined environmental education with outdoor adventure. Elementary students engaged in sessions tackling issues like habitat destruction and plastic pollution while snorkeling and kayaking in Clearwater Bay. Middle schoolers dove deeper into conservation topics exploring diverse ecosystems and participating in mock trials and ecological restoration activities.
Additionally, Clearwater Marine Aquarium extended its impact through a paid educational internship for a college student from an under-resourced background. This intern contributed over 500 hours, culminating in the design and delivery of a full week of camp programming. The 2025 camp season stands as a powerful example of how targeted support and access to nature-based education can inspire the next generation of marine scientists and conservation leaders.
Students created personal art notes of thanks to Ron Jon Surf Shop and Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation for having the opportunity to attend the camp and enjoy such immersive learning experiences. Each year, Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation works with community partners like Clearwater Marine Aquarium to support efforts that maintain healthy, safe and sustainable coastal environments in Florida.
