A Promise to Make a Difference
Meet Maurice “Maui” Goodbear, founder of StreetWaves in Delray Beach, Florida — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to mentoring underserved youth through free aquatics-based programs, including swimming, surfing, boating, ocean safety and after-school enrichment.
StreetWaves began in 2008, but its story started five years earlier with a promise. After Maui’s younger brother, Melvyn, was murdered by a 16-year-old gang member, Maui promised at his funeral that he would do something to help inner-city youth.
Years later, during a solo surf session in Miami Beach, the idea came to him: bring kids to the ocean.
Maui had learned to surf as a young person, often skipping school to surf. He understood the power of the ocean and recognized that many young people living near the coast were missing out on that experience entirely.
Since 2008, StreetWaves has introduced more than 3,000 children and teens to surfing and the ocean. Its programs use the water to build confidence, swimming and water-safety skills, environmental awareness and life skills, while exposing youth to educational and career opportunities in the “Blue Economy.”
At the heart of StreetWaves is a simple philosophy: “Let the water do the work.” Maui believes that creating space for young people in nature — particularly those who have historically been excluded from ocean experiences — can open the door to greater self-confidence, connection and possibility.
StreetWaves is more than teaching kids to surf. It’s about helping them discover what the water can make possible.
