Protecting and Restoring Coastlines Remains a Top Priority

A recent FLORIDA Today article by Jay Waymer highlights the success of a decades-long effort to restore natural dune systems—creating stronger protection from storms while helping native wildlife return to Florida’s beaches.

The story also features reflections from Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation Board members Malcolm Kirschenbaum and Jack Kirschenbaum, whose early leadership helped build momentum for government action to address coastal erosion in the region. Alongside hundreds of dedicated residents, their advocacy and legal efforts contributed to the federal government’s 1999 commitment to a 50-year, as-needed beach renourishment program—laying the foundation for decades of shoreline restoration and the thriving dune ecosystems highlighted in the article today.

While Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation was not involved in the specific projects featured in the story, we’re proud to support organizations across Florida that share the same commitment to protecting and restoring our coastlines. Supporting these efforts is at the heart of our mission, and we are committed to helping expand their impact for years to come.

Through grants that fund dune restoration, sea oat planting, endangered beach mouse habitat protection, and other coastal conservation initiatives, we help preserve the natural places that make Florida’s beaches so special. By investing in organizations such as the City of Cape Canaveral, Space Coast Surfrider, Keep Pinellas Beautiful, WildBlue Sea, and Brevard Zoo, among others, we help ensure their hands-on work to restore and strengthen Florida’s coastal ecosystems can continue.

Beyond coastal restoration, the Foundation is also proud to support waterway and ocean preservation, water safety programs, and initiatives that preserve and celebrate the legacy of surfing.
