Partnership in Action: Promoting Water Safety and Inclusion for All
Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation is proud to partner with the Down Syndrome Foundation of Florida, which offers an annual swimming scholarship program designed to teach children and adults to swim, promote water safety, and provide stroke lessons for older adults.
Since 2011, the Down Syndrome Foundation of Florida has created opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families to enrich their lives through inclusive programs and meaningful community engagement.
With financial support from the Foundation and partners like Surfing’s Evolution, 110 families in need have participated in aquatic activities that enhance spatial awareness, strengthen and tone muscles, improve flexibility, and reduce joint stress through the buoyancy of water. The total contribution to families in the Spring 2024 through this Fall 2025 was $39,329 in swim scholarships.
In addition to the Swim Scholarship Program, the Foundation also offers an annual Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) class with Dr. Harvey Barnett, the pioneer of self-rescue techniques that teach infants to roll onto their backs and float. Dr. Barnett continues to be an invaluable advocate for drowning prevention and swimming education.
“These vital programs wouldn’t be possible without dedicated partners like Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation,” says Robin Longley, Program Manager. “Specialized programs like these are essential to ensure individuals with Down syndrome can be fully included in their communities and experience every aspect of life—especially for families in need.”
