  • New Smyrna Beach Watergoat
Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation has just had our first sponsored Watergoat installed! The location of this fantastic trash collecting device is at 10th Street and US 1 in New Smyrna Beach. This Watergoat was installed in conjunction with the City of New Smyrna Beach and the Marine Discovery Center. A Watergoat collects trash washing in from stormwater drains on surrounding streets before it hits our waterways and oceans. The Streets Department of New Smyrna Beach will be removing debris on a regular basis for proper disposal and the Marine Discovery Center will be responsible for collecting data on the types of debris that collects in the Watergoat. This data collection, as well as ongoing education, can help identify where debris is coming from, which will help to address the issue of marine debris better as time goes on. In addition to the overall benefit to the environment, reduced marine pollution also benefits both tourists and area residents who enjoy local beaches and the Indian River Lagoon. Reduced marine debris will also benefit our marine animals, who suffer every day from man-made trash. We would like to thank everyone involved in this install, Watergoat, the Marine Discovery Center and the City of New Smyrna Beach, for their dedication and commitment to improving our environment so future generations may also enjoy our waters. For more information on the Watergoat and how you can help battle marine debris, please visit www.watergoat.org and www.marinediscoverycenter.org.
